Updates from us
Flanker Press and Rink Rat Productions are excited to announce that the Operation book series by Helen C. Escott has been optioned for film and television!
That’s right! These bestselling and award-winning novels may be headed your way on the small screen or the silver screen. If you haven’t read the entire series, now’s your chance. The novels are set in Newfoundland and Labrador and follow the careers of Royal Newfoundland Constabulary Sergeant Nicholas Myra and RCMP Corporal Gail McNaughton as they chase down criminals and bring justice to the victims of these perpetrators.
Flanker Press is celebrating 30 years in publishing and continues to provide a quality publishing service to the local and regional writing community. From publisher Jerry Cranford: “I would like to congratulate Helen C. Escott on taking this huge step in her professional writing career. When I published Operation Wormwood in 2018, I felt right away that this talented writer is going places. Adaptation of her novels into film and television seemed inevitable to me.”
Rink Rat Productions has produced high-quality programing for over 25 years. Most recently they co-produced the critically acclaimed feature film Maudie, an international co-production between Newfoundland (Rink Rat), Ontario (Screen Door), and Ireland (Parallel Films). Rink Rat also produced the movie-of-the-week A Christmas Fury for CBC. Mary Sexton, president of Rink Rat Productions, has a new feature film being released in the Fall: Skeet, which she produced and is written and directed by her son Nik Sexton.
Sexton is thrilled to be optioning Helen C. Escott's Operation series. She added, “We are very much looking forward to working with Helen and a local scriptwriter to bring the Operation series to Life! The best part of my job is telling Newfoundland and Labrador stories. Helen is an amazing writer. I have high expectations!”

Flanker Press Named Benetech Global Certified Accessible™ Publisher
Publisher achieves Global Certified Accessible designation through eBOUND Canada’s Accessible Certification Program.
Paradise, Newfoundland and Labrador - Monday, April 25, 2022
Flanker Press is now a Benetech Global Certified Accessible™ (GCA) publisher. Benetech, a nonprofit that empowers communities with software for social good, issues this accreditation to those publishers who produce EPUBs that meet a full range of accessibility features required to support the needs of all readers, including those with disabilities and learning differences. Flanker Press completed certification through eBOUND Canada, a not-for-profit that enables independent Canadian publishers to engage in the digital marketplace.
“We are very pleased to announce that we have reached this important milestone,” says Jerry Cranford, publisher at Flanker Press. “Making books and ebooks accessible to as many individuals as possible, while enabling a more pleasant reading experience for them, is a worthy goal toward which all publishers should strive. And we will continue to pursue such initiatives, keep abreast of advances in technology, upgrade our software and hardware accordingly, and broaden our knowledge base to achieve just that.”
“We’re very happy to be certified as an accessible publisher,” says Peter Hanes, Digital and Social Media Coordinator at Flanker Press. “I would like to personally thank Ashley Cowell from Ebound Canada, and Leah Brochu from the National Network for Equitable Library Services, for their help and guidance throughout the training and certification process. Accessibility is essential in all aspects of life, and we’re happy that our ebooks will be available to a wider readership going forward.”
“All digital content can - and should - be born accessible,” said Brad Turner, Vice President and General Manager of Global Education and Literacy at Benetech. “Readers can select Flanker Press’ Global Certified Accessible ebooks trusting that they meet a wide range of accessibility needs.”
Benetech’s GCA publisher certification program is the first ever, third-party EPUB certification program to verify ebook accessibility. All approved publishers have demonstrated success consistently producing files in accordance with Benetech’s GCA certification standard, meeting the EPUB Accessibility 1.0 Conformance and Discovery specification and exceeding a publishing standard level of WCAG 2.0 AA. Benetech recognizes these publishers as creators of fully accessible EPUBs. eBOUND Canada, a GCA international partner, completed the evaluation.
“eBOUND believes that all content born digital, should be born accessible so that all people can have access to all content. As such, eBOUND is delighted to have formed a partnership with Benetech to support our Canadian independent publisher clients as they go through the important process of having all content born accessible. eBOUND’s goal is to have 80% of our publishing clients producing accessible content by 2024, supporting the goal of the Department of Canadian Heritage, who’s generous support has made this work possible” said Deborah Nelson, CEO of eBOUND Canada.

The incredible news keeps rolling in . . .
Emily Hepditch has won the 2021 Rakuten Kobo Emerging Writer’s Prize for Mystery for her bestselling, debut novel, The Woman in the Attic!
The Rakuten Kobo Emerging Writer Prize is now in its seventh year. The winners were selected from a shortlist of talented Canadian writers chosen by Kobo’s team of booksellers, with book completion rates, customer ratings, and reviews taken into consideration.
Author Amy Stuart, this year’s Mystery judge, said of the book: “The Woman in the Attic is the sort of confident and assured mystery you’d expect from a seasoned writer, not one in the very early stages of a promising career. In this twisty and compelling novel, Emily Hepditch takes readers to the windswept and remote corners of Newfoundland, where her young narrator, Hannah, has returned home to a mother struggling with dementia and a house in just enough disrepair to begin revealing its secrets. A modern thriller with gothic touches, The Woman in the Attic ends on such a propulsive note that I found myself reading the final pages over and over again. With this truly surprising mystery under her belt, I can’t wait to read what Emily Hepditch conjures up next.”
Congratulations Emily on your well deserved success.

A Facebook live event!
Please join us for the Virtual Book launch of In Search of Adventure - 70 Years of the RCMP in Newfoundland and Labrador on Saturday, August 1st at 2:00 pm Newfoundland Time.
On August 1, 2020, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police will celebrate 70 years of policing in Newfoundland and Labrador with the launch of: In Search of Adventure – 70 Years of the RCMP in Newfoundland and Labrador, written by Helen C. Escott and published by Flanker Press. Award winning author Helen C. Escott has captured the stories from the Veterans behind the police lines. This historical collection will be released on August 1, 2020 to mark the anniversary and will be available in soft cover and ebook at stores throughout the province and online.
These RCMP Veterans had a front row seat to history. From UFO encounters, to moments of sheer terror, to discovering innovative ways to connect with the communities they policed, to investigating the murders of two of their own. As well as personal stories from two constables who were in the middle of the Badger Riot on March 10, 1959 when 24-year old RNC Constable William Moss was fatally injured.
These Veterans built the foundation of the world renowned RCMP and Escott was proud to take on the project, “These police officers lived by The Principles of Law Enforcement. They worked toward our collective success with crime prevention, community trust and engagement, never being above the law, always believing - the police are the public and the public are the police.”
On March 22, 1949, nine RCMP officers arrived in Canada’s newest province and opened a Divisional Headquarters on Kenna's Hill in St. John's. On August 1, 1950, the RCMP was officially recognized with an agreement between RCMP Deputy Commissioner Gray and the Attorney General for the province, the Honourable L. R. Curtis.
Escott, a retired Civilian Member of the RCMP, interviewed each Veteran and documented their stories. Including three of the last living Newfoundland Rangers, the first female police officer to serve in this province and the first Mounties to arrive in 1949 to Canada’s newest province.
In Search of Adventure is Helen C. Escott’s first historical memoir. Her bestselling crime thriller, Operation Vanished, was awarded a Silver Medal – Best Regional Fiction at the 24th annual Independent Publisher Book Awards. Her first crime thriller, Operation Wormwood, was a top five finalist for the 2019 Arthur Ellis Awards, Best First Crime Novel, by the Crime Writers of Canada.
